Is yoga something you can learn yourself from a book, or is it better to join a group?

It is much easier to learn from a teacher, but some yoga is better than no yoga. So what you might try with a book is to read the instructions carefully for a posture, and then try what you think that they are explaining to do and see how it feels. Through repetition and patience you may find that you will build some confidence with the postures. If it is possible to get to a teacher, even occasionally you will find that your confidence will grow much faster and you will feel more comfortable knowing that what you are doing is correct and the book may just make more sense.

What about starting with a good DVD. Teacher extraordinaire (started as Iyengarian I believe) Barbara Benagh has 2 wonderful new DVDs available: Yoga for Beginners and Yoga for Stress Relief. The segments have been configured and reconfigued into many practices, from 10 min. to over an hour. Stress Relief has some wonderful restorative and therapeutic applications. Beginners has targeted routines as well, but more active.
