Extra thick yoga mat

A yoga mat can be helpful in many ways: it can keep you from slipping while practicing your poses or it can provide some padding for knees, hips, and any place else where you don’t have your own padding. The traditional “sticky mat” is thin and doesn’t offer much padding, but newer, thicker versions are now being produced. With washable outer cover, provided with two sown-in carry handles suitable for a wide range of restorative and supported poses or as lounge furniture. Read more »

Yoga Positions For Beginners

Obviously little benefit would be derived from either asanas (yoga exercises) or mudras in this yoga positions for beginners performed while the mind is in such a state of fatigue that it cannot address itself to the task at hand. Read more »

Neti, nose cleaning

Neti is a Hatha Yoga cleaning process. Neti is cleansing of the nasal passage of the respiratory system. By cleaning and affecting the mucous membranes inside the nose, they are stimulated so that the whole surrounding area is also strengthened, including the eyebrow centre, which is an important point of contact for the Anja Chakra, the third eye, or, physiologically, the pineal gland. The entire breathing system is affected by Neti. The little cilia hairs which clean the air passages by ’sweeping’ up the dirt are also activated as the mucous membranes are affected. Read more »

Beginner yoga dvd

Trying to find well-done yoga videos that are truly appropriate for beginners can be a discouraging challenge.

Most yoga DVDs these days aim at intermediate or advanced yoga exercisers and there are no explicit yoga positions for beginners. These yoga DVDs may offer a few beginner yoga moves here and there, but the instruction clearly is geared to yoga exercisers who already know what to do.

The few yoga DVDs that are marketed for beginners often are appallingly boring, as if flabby muscles always mean a flabby brain. And too often, they provide no way to add extra challenge or complexity to the postures routine, as if beginning exercisers are going to remain beginners forever.

Yoga zone conditioning and stress release beginner

It’s nice, then, to discover Yoga Zone: Flexibility and Tone, a beginners’ tape that offers the depth of instruction and easy pace that true beginners need.

When these yoga DVDs describe how the muscles of the feet ought to rotate through to the little toe, you’ll know — and be able to feel — just what to do.

But each move contains so many of these instructions that it can be a little overwhelming to try to master all of them at once.

Yoga for beginner dvd

Another well done yoga beginners DVD, although more focused on power yoga is Mark Blanchard’s Progressive Power Yoga. Blanchard has trained many fit celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Kim Delaney, Rachel Griffiths, Willem Dafoe, Jennie Garth, Andy Garcia, James Wilder, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. Blanchard also specializes in training golfers, basketball players and other professional athletes since he keenly understands yoga’s healing powers. “The internal practice improves mental focus, clarity and split-second concentration while the outward physical practice hones strength, speedwork and reaction-time,” he says. A leader of the Power Yoga movement, Mark Blanchard has his Studio City location in Southern California with ten others planned around the United States. Known as Mark Blanchard’s Power Yoga Centers, they are flourishing. “Students tell us how they appreciate the family atmosphere and friendly greetings when they enter,” says Mark Blanchard. “There’s no attitude in our studios. We come only to practice and to feel calm and in balance with the world around us.”

A solid power yoga program should help you feel more powerful, confident and balanced yet also simultaneously feel compassionate, fluid, gentle and kind. Basically, the term ‘Power Yoga’ was developed to help people understand that this style of Hatha (the physical kind) is a challenging practice with athletic movements that help you energetically flow from one pose to the next. But there’s so much more to it than that!

Yoga for beginners

Yoga positions for beginners are usually effortless to learn. If you have not experienced any beginner yoga class or have not seen one, that is not a problem.

If it is your first time to hear of yoga, you will of course wonder how these exercises are done and how it looks like. Since you are a beginner, you will also definitely ask what kind of positions will be best for you.

If you want to practice the yoga positions for beginners, you must believe that yoga as seen on yoga DVDs can be effective and will help you to gain more energy or be refreshed.

Yoga is not just a modern application like fitness or Pilates. It has been practiced and applied a long time ago and up to the present, the yoga practitioners are benefiting a lot from doing regular yoga positions.

A high level of joint flexibility is the main benefit that the yoga positions for beginners give. Although the yoga positions for beginners are just simple and basic, it can slowly bring up a healthy lifestyle and bring more when it is practiced over and over again.

Beginner yoga exercises

The yoga positions for beginners are very appealing and stimulating to perform. Beginners will never find it hard to keep up with the exercises because it is just simple. The technique of yoga gives a very big contributing factor to our internal glands and organs. It also includes the parts of the human body which is hardly ever stimulated.

If you want to learn the yoga positions for beginners, you can learn it easily at home through a suitable beginner yoga DVD or at school where yoga is taught.

Some basic yoga positions for beginners include standing poses, seated poses, forward and backward bends, balance and twisting. These yoga positions for beginners are not that far from those who are used to practicing yoga. Only that the extreme poses and positions are handled at the latter part of the exercise.

Another point to remember when practicing beginners yoga postures is that the duration in executing the positions are lessened because a beginner cannot fully cope up with a longer time exposure in practice. Rest is required of the beginner so that he will not be drained easily to prepare the body for further positions.

Self discipline is the only requisite required in the first months of practice. Yoga is not just doing yoga and executing the poses. If you haven’t mastered the basics yet, do not jump into the complex stages and positions because you will not feel the essence of executing the yoga positions for beginners.

Beginners yoga - an explanation

Yoga in its definition of the structure of the world has many things in common with Sankhya, but it differs indeed from Sankhya in admitting the existence of God. Of course the God’s concept in Yoga, as happened in Nyaya, has passed through different stages: from the primitive one, indifferent presence, God has become, under the influence of theistic tides, an active assistant of liberation. The assimilation with Shiva of the popular religion confers him little by little all the ownerships of Ishvara, the Supreme almighty Being. Read more »

What is yoga - history of yoga

It is useless to seek the origins of Yoga, which are submerged in that magical history in which primitive people live and which the evolving of culture doesn’t succeed to disregard. Certain analogies with the doctrines of ancient schools of China as emerged in Taoism, make a great deal probable that existed to a large extent in southern and south-oriental Asia certain routines, based above all on the control of breath and on auto hypnotic processes, from which slowly and with degrees derived both Yoga and the mentioned Taoist currents. Beginner yoga poses for meditation

The term asana or seat, firm seating, is used in Hatha yoga to indicate a large variety of different yoga postures which typically involve bending and stretching the trunk of the body, or more precisely to twist the spine, and serves to keep it very flexible. The difference between yoga poses and Western physical exercises consist mainly in this that the latter are largely intended to build up muscular strength; the yoga poses not at all. In the yoga poses the chief aim is to cultivate poise and balance which, whether in sitting, or in standing or in walking, will need the minimum of muscular effort, and if possible no effort at all. Customer Review: Incredible
I am an Early Childhood professional and bought this CD for the teachers I train to use at nap time. I first tried it out on my 10 year old son who had been having a lot of trouble sleeping since his father died. Two nights in a row he fell asleep within 10 minutes he was fast asleep. Even my teenage daughter found the CD relaxing. I can not wait to introduce it to the teachers and parents I work with! Please make more!
Customer Review: Not Suitable for Boys 8 and Over
All my 10 year old did was roll his eyes and laugh, "This is baby stuff" I feel like the other reviews I read were made up by the author's friends. He also pointed out that crabs don't weave seaweed. This is really only appropriate for preschoolers.

Customer Review: Great CD
I bought this CD for use as a relaxation activity in an early childhood classroom for 3 to 5 year old children and it's wonderful. If I could give it more stars, it would have 10! This would be great for your child to listen to at night to help them wind down for bedtime, or in the afternoon for a rest time activity, and it's great for the classroom. I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Lots of fun
My son loves this DVD, it is funny, maybe not the fully relax yoga, but of course is made for kids and that is how they learn better: having fun. Nice songs and they have kids from 3 to 6, which is good for my […] to watch that not all the kids make the excercises perfectly. I will say worth the money
Customer Review: Fun for active little ones
I had Yoga Kids on video tape for my older kids & they enjoyed it a lot, so I got this one for my toddler. He loves it! He tries to follow along & do the yoga (it's so funny). There are some "classic" yoga poses modified for little ones and some exercizes that are mostly movement and using imagination rather than poses. The teacher is very fun (looks like she's having fun) and warm and has a kind voice.

AM/PM Yoga for Beginners

This yoga set is perfect for busy people who need to work in a way to relax. On the a.m. tape, Rodney Yee takes you through a 15-minute morning yoga set, while Patricia Walden leads a 20-minute evening routine on the p.m. tape. The a.m. tape was filmed on a beach on Maui at sunrise, providing a soothing background for this gentle workout. In the morning, Rodney tells us, "the body is rested but stiff from inactivity." The stretches he demonstrates are designed to increase circulation, improve mobility, and bring clarity to your mind. The movements are easy to follow (they include a conscious relaxation, the a.m. workout, and a guided meditation), and the set is short enough that it can be squeezed into the most hectic of morning schedules. The p.m. video was filmed at sunset in Death Valley. Patricia's yoga set is designed to quiet the mind after the stress of the day and to help you make the transition from active to quiet. She uses a combination of a centering series, standing poses, forward bends, and restorative poses to help you ease into night. You will need some firm blankets to sit on and a yoga strap (although a belt or scarf will serve the same purpose) to perform these movements. Perfect for the beginner and for the overworked. –Jenny Brown

Customer Review: AM Yoga
When I cannot get to a Yoga class this short (20 minute) tape is very helpful. I was especially pleased to be able to get a VCR tape since I don't have a DVD player in my room. I like the AM Yoga, but found the PM Yoga tape too difficult for me.
Customer Review: Nice Videos, but . . .
These videos each have their strong points, and I've used and enjoy them both. The biggest flaw is that, as a set, they are so out of balance with each other. As other reviewers have mentioned, the A.M. video is substantially easier than the P.M., so folks who want a good workout dislike the first, and those who are a bit out of shape dislike the second. I use the A.M. when I feel like I need something easy and gentle, and when I lapse in practicing yoga for a while, this is invariably the tape I come back to, to get me going again. (I move on to the Yoga for Energy DVD in this Gaiam/Yoga Journal series, once I loosen up again, though.) The P.M. video just about killed me when I first tried it. However, the moment when all that vigorous stretching is finished, and you finally go into relaxation feels sooo good. (Like the old joke: "Why are you hitting yourself?""Because it feels so good when I stop!") So, I come back to this tape, when I have time in the afternoon. And I've improved enough so that the poses don't seem too difficult now, but they still push me to my limit before …

Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout

It was probably inevitable that Jane Fonda, who played such a defining role in the aerobics boom of the 1980s, would be on the yoga train as well when it started rolling in the 1990s. And on this tape (recorded in 1993), she does a good job of it. The focus is on the "sun salutation," a connected series of poses that builds strength, flexibility, and balance, and with repeated practice this offers what Fonda calls "an excellent full-body workout." The program is divided into three sections, any one of which can be practiced on its own. The first breaks down the various poses comprising the sun salute, while the second is devoted to several repetitions of the salute itself; three variations are offered, two incorporating some of Fonda's own techniques and one that's closer to the "classical" or "Series C" salutation. The final section (which might actually be a better place to prepare for your practice than to finish it) focuses on relaxation and breathing. Fonda's manner is brisk, but her instructions are clear and concise, and while the tape isn't especially difficult, it should prove challenging enough for beginners and most intermediates. –Kelly Welldon

Customer Review: Really intentense Yoga by Jane
I got this tape as a present for my birthday.I think it is a really good yoga tape.Jane Fonda really makes yoga fun and easy. This tape is ideal for experienced yoga people as it is for non-yoga people. Jane Fonda goes through every move very carefully.I felt really realxed and stretched out after this tape.It is real good stress reducing tape.It is really good for flexibility.Jane`s Sun Salutation routine really gets the flexibility going. After you are none with this tape you will feel great. It is actually one of my favorite yoga tapes.Really good for people who don`t know about yoga and want to start doing it.It is also good for people who do alot of stregth training and aerobics.I guarantee you`ll love this yoga routine.
Customer Review: An awesome intro to yoga - if only there was a DVD!
"Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" is one of the first exercise videos I bought, and it's still one of my favorites! Jane starts out with a 20-minute stretching/toning routine that consists of a number of different poses. Next, she focuses on the Sun Salutation and leads you through a 15-minute segment based on the one sequence. She starts with the easiest variation of the routine, and gradually increases the intensity. Experienced yoga practitioners can repeat Level 3 (the most difficult level) three times, while beginners can stick to Level 1 (the easiest level). Throughout the segment, she repeats her demonstration of the lower levels for newbies. Jane finishes with a 15-minute relaxation routine. While some people might enjoy this section the most, I generally skip it. Since beginning yoga, I've bought a number of other yoga instructionals, all on DVD; "Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" is the only VHS tape I own. As much as …

Customer Review: Best Style of Yoga for Beginners
Ana Brett & Ravi Singh are simply the best for anyone looking to start yoga. I had been too intimidated to go take a class and the other Yoga for Beginners DVD I found on Amazon was misleading. It was full of asanas too difficult and instructions were too fast. Plus it was just plain boring. Believe me, as a beginner, Kundalini Yoga is the best style of yoga to get you into a practice. You don't have to build up to difficult poses. It is all exercises you can already do and I promise you the effects are fast as well which keeps you going back for more! There are two 25 minute sets. One is more beginner the other is for any level and something to grow your practice with which makes it a great investment. The instructions are clear, the voices are soothing. The music is excellent and best of all, the workout is easy to follow and actually fun to do. It is all in all an incredible DVD and I can't recommend it hightly enough!

If you have purchased any type of exercise DVD before you will know that presentation is everything and an uninspiring video will never come back off the shelf. The voiceover is wonderfully relaxing and inpspirational and by the time you are finished with this workout you will be both relaxed and invigorated. I find myself bringing out this DVD often and I plan on getting more from this duo.

Customer Review: Barbara's Teaching Shines
I've been out of my yoga practice for about 5 yrs and found my old yoga videos were not clear enough in their instruction to get me started again. I was familiar with Barbara Benagh because a friend of mine back in Boston has taken classes at her studio for many years. Seeing Barbara as the instructor on the video gave me some assurance that it would be a good product. It most definitely is a fantastic video and I would recommend it highly not only to people interested in starting yoga, but also for people who have just not done yoga for awhile and want to get back into it. It is nice to be able to have Barbara teach me, thanks so much Barbara!

Prenatal Yoga With Shiva Rea

The best thing about this prenatal yoga program is that there is a model for each trimester. Instructor Shiva Rea demonstrates each of the stretches and exercises for the first trimester, and two pregnant women show modifications for the second and third trimesters (they're even dressed in different colors for easy reference). This removes the self-doubt home-exercisers often have about the safety of certain moves–especially in that cumbersome final stage of pregnancy. Using gentle voice-over instruction, Rea and her assistants take viewers through a half hour of meditational stretches using blocks and chairs for support. She follows that up with 16 minutes of floor work: lunge pose, bridge pose, child's pose, plank pose–all with the necessary adjustments. She winds things up with a four-minute guided relaxation on her back–the traditional position–with the second-trimester woman on her side and the third on her side with one leg up on a chair. By including the different adaptations, Rea has made a program with the flexibility to carry an expectant mom through her entire pregnancy–and beyond, if she wishes. –Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Review: Nice, relaxing stretching
A friend of mine loaned me this video and I just tried it out. I'm 13 weeks along so was able to do the first/second trimester poses. It's really a nice video. Shiva Rea's voice is soothing and relaxing. The video is calm and the movements flow into one another. All you need is a chair (any chair will do) to support you and you're on your way to making your body a better place for your baby and for its birth.
Customer Review: I LOVE this video!
I just got this video for Christmas and I immediately fell in love with it. I feel absolutely wonderful after doing the workout. It was challenging but there were no poses that I felt I couldn't do. I've been pregnant before so I was a little suspicious of what they'd have somebody in the third trimester try and pull off, but they've got a different woman doing the poses for each trimester and the third trimester woman was doing poses that I think were completely realistic. Shiva Rea's voice is calming and the music is soothing.

A.M. and P.M. Yoga for Beginners

A.M. Yoga for Beginners
“The morning is a precious time," says the narrator of A.M. Yoga for Beginners. "Just as the sun rises and falls, so do our natural rhythms. The morning is perfect time to open our bodies and center our minds." This 20-minute yoga practice with supple instructor Rodney Yee is the perfect way to start your day by energizing your body and calming your mind. Filmed on the beach at Maui at sunrise, the video starts with a 4-minute Conscious Relaxation focusing on breathing, then glides into a 14-minute series of yoga poses that are simultaneously relaxing and energizing. It ends with a 2-minute seated Guided Meditation to center your body and mind. Yee's instruction is detailed and gentle. The video is beautifully filmed: you watch the waves roll in as Yee demonstrates yoga poses on a sandy beach. The yoga practice awakens and stretches your muscles gently, leaving you balanced and focused. "Yoga is the foundation of my day," says Yee. "A few minutes in the morning will help give meaning to your day." –Joan Price

P.M. Yoga for Beginners
“The evening is the perfect time to calmly transition between being active and being quiet," says Patricia Walden, instructor of P.M. Yoga for Beginners. "One of the greatest gifts yoga has to offer is deep relaxation." This 20-minute program is designed to balance, calm, and revitalize you at the end of the day. It starts with centering poses: gentle stretches bringing awareness and quiet to your senses. Next are standing poses to release tension, increase circulation, expand the lungs, and help you breathe more deeply. Next, forward bends cool the body and bring quiet to the nervous system. The final restorative poses are so relaxing that you may fall asleep. Walden tells you not only how to do the poses, but what you should feel, and how to quiet your body and your mind. Instruction is soothing and explicit. Although this video is aimed at beginners, seldom are modifications given for the less flexible novice, so if any pose causes discomfort or seems impossible, don't push beyond your personal comfort level. The video was filmed on the windswept sands of Death Valley. –Joan Price

Customer Review: Gentle Yoga
I really like Rodney Yee and have a number of his DVD's. This is good, however, I would call it Gentle vs. Beginner. I use it when I feel like a quick, light, relaxing stretch. If you are looking for more of a workout I would recommend Yoga for Flexibility (30 minutes), Yoga for Strength (30 minutes) or Total Body Yoga (60 minutes).
Customer Review: Great way to start the day
This was recommended by a friend and I am glad he did. My wife and I each start our day with AM Yoga and it is wonderful.

Power Yoga - Total Body Workout

Power yoga "demands your attention," says instructor Rodney Yee. He leads a challenging, constantly progressing series of poses, one flowing into the next, integrating breath, movement, tension, and relaxation. The poses include Sun Salutation, standing poses, forward bends, back bends, twists, and arm balances. The first poses are fairly easy, and with each repetition of the series, Yee adds on more difficult movements, extending the series without pausing. You're encouraged to do as much of the series that fits your level, up to the entire 65-minute workout if you're an experienced yoga practitioner. Although you can begin at any level, some familiarity with yoga is recommended. The Hawaiian setting is gorgeous and inspiring. This is an excellent yoga workout that you can grow with, adding on more as you get stronger. –Joan Price

Customer Review: Not for Beginners nor the Faint of Heart
This is a fun, fast paced yoga workout. One must know the poses and how to do them safely so this DVD is not for beginners. When I need a good butt-kicking I grab this workout. I have read reviews that complain of Rodney Yees ego however I do not agree. He appears as a confident master. It is fascinating to watch him work as yoga students know there is always room for improvement.
Customer Review: My favorite yoga DVD
I have been using this DVD for two years now, and after buying a number of others, I have to say this one is still my favorite. It is truly a total body workout, and with no other DVD do I feel so stretched and relaxed from head to toe, mind and body. This might not be the right choice for someone with no yoga experience at all. There is little in the way of suggestions for beginner modifications. But Yee's commentary is easy to follow and the workout, while challenging, is not terribly difficult. I highly recommend this!
